Choose JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF for the destination

The best format is the one the receiving software accepts while preserving the properties that matter. Converting an extension does not improve source detail and may remove animation, transparency, or metadata.

Workflow

  1. Identify essential properties

    Decide whether you need transparent pixels, sharp text, animation, broad legacy support, repeated editing, or compact photographic delivery.

  2. Match the format

    Prefer JPG for broadly compatible photos, PNG for lossless edges and alpha, WebP for modern mixed use, and AVIF when compact output outweighs slower encoding and older-app risk.

  3. Test the receiving app

    Export a copy, open it in the exact editor, CMS, email client, or portal that will receive it, and check alpha, color, dimensions, and file size.

Limits to understand

JPG cannot store transparency; PNG photos can be large; WebP and AVIF may fail in older software; conversion cannot recreate detail already lost or reliably preserve every profile and metadata field.

Privacy mode

Supported conversions decode and encode in the current browser session. Keep the source because the downloaded image is a new representation, not an archival replacement.

Verify the result

Check the output MIME and extension, pixel dimensions, transparency against a contrasting background, color in the destination app, and visible artifacts around text, gradients, and high-contrast edges.

Frequently asked questions

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It avoids another lossy save at that moment, but PNG cannot reconstruct detail that JPEG compression already removed.

Why is my PNG much larger?

PNG preserves exact pixels and alpha efficiently for graphics, not complex photographic noise. A modern lossy format may be more appropriate for photos.
